The Cyprus Government offers a few alternative ways for obtaining a Cyprus Residency or the Cyprus citizenship. The procedure for obtaining the Cyprus passport through the investors’ program is fast, secure and easy. It only takes a couple of months for the procedure to be completed.
A lot of discussions have taken place recently about the Malta passport and whether this is a better scheme from the one Cyprus has to offer. The Maltese government decided that the scheme would allow foreigners to ‘’buy’’ a Maltese passport with a contribution of Euro 1,150,000 (previously the scheme was to be approved with Euro 650,000 contribution only) without any residency or investment requirements, thus gaining entrance and residency in any of the other 27 EU member states. This scheme is under scrutiny from both the opposition party in Malta as well as the European Union. The Maltese government also proposed that it would publish the names of individuals obtaining Maltese passports, another issue which is very controversial. Furthermore, the European Union considers this scheme as dangerous for the security and the public interest within the European Union.

VAT increases in Cyprus
The House of Representatives had voted for an increase of the VAT rates on the 6th of December 2012. In accordance with the law 167(I)/2012 the following changes have been voted:
a. Standard VAT rate increases to 19% as from 13 January 2014.
b. Reduced VAT rate of 8% increases to 9% as from 13 January 2014.
